We have every reason to believe that the New Testament church changed the known world in 30 years. A remarkable feat for something that started out with 12 men, who were not seen as the cream of the crop in the society of that day.
As they say today, they must have been doing something right.
Was it the fact that had been with Jesus for three years?
Was it the fact that they had seen the death and resurrection of Jesus?
Was it the fact that they believed he was the messiah?
Was it the fact that they were constantly the dispenser of miracles?
Was it the fact that they waited until they were endued with the power of the Holy Spirit?
Was it the fact that they loved not their lives unto death?
Was it the fact that what Jesus taught was not an optional extra in their lives?
Was it the fact that they took Jesus command to go and make disciples seriously?
Was it the fact that there was no secular/spiritual divide in their lives?
Was it the fact that as a church there were no buildings?
Was it the fact that they believed in the priesthood of all believers, not just a select few?
Was it the fact that the church was led by servant leadership not ‘authority over’ leadership?
Was it the fact that they had all things in common?
Was it the fact that they met daily to share a meal together?
Was it the fact that they didn’t have religious rituals like communion?
Was it the fact that they didn’t shoot the wounded?
Was it the fact that they made loving one another a priority?
Was it the fact that they had ministries in the church, not positions?
Was it the fact that corporate prayer was an everyday occurrence?
Was it the fact that they made war against principalities and powers not people?
Was it the fact that Jesus was the head of the church, not the senior pastor?
Was it the fact that they were led by a plurality of elders, not a one man band?
Was it the fact that no one was paid to lead the church?
Was it the fact that they had faith in God, not faith in faith?
Was it the fact that they didn’t have a prosperity doctrine?
It may have been all or some or none of the above. What we have to ask ourselves however, why is it that we can’t do in 2,000 years what they did in only 30 years.
Could it be that the Western church today has very few of the above qualities suggesting that they are all essential if we are to have any hope of ever changing our world in 30 years?
Why is it that no one is bothered about the fact?
Why is it that no one is even asking why?
