You might be without realising it. I was looking at the cover of my local street directory and thought to myself, say I want to travel from point A to point B and didn’t know the route to take. I would look up the map and find out what was the best and shortest route to take to get me to my destination.
Only a moron would do this and then take an entirely different route which might mean the journey would take twice as long or even never get to the destination at all.
Unfortunately, the church is full of morons who do just that. They read what the bible says and then ignore its directions and go their own way. As a result it takes them twice as long to achieve the result they wanted or they don’t achieve it at all.
Take for example the way we do church. In the New Testament it is full of rich language and description of how the New Testament church conducted itself. The end result was that they impressed everyone with their love and good works and drew thousands into the kingdom of God.
Their whole life revolved around caring for and loving one another, meeting together in their homes, eating meals together, proclaiming the lordship of Christ and being available to perform the miraculous. This was all after they had been filled with the Holy Spirit.
What do we do?
We ignore the obvious. We have set up a system of religion that prevents most of us from ever having anything to do with each other, preventing anyone from performing the miraculous, make sure that only the chosen few that are seen as superior beings perform in meetings full of religious ritual and devoid of relationship and structure things so that we avoid commitment of any kind except to programmes.
As far as being filled with the Holy Spirit and inviting him to control and orchestrate what we do when we gather together, we have made it an art form to exclude him at every opportunity. Why should we need him when we have a human leader with various degrees and a charismatic personality and who is a great organiser.
The fact that the absence of the Holy Spirit is usually the reason why most churches are not growing and where most are going backwards has not registered with most people, especially the leadership of churches. They would rather have faith in the tried and tested status quo that has been going on for 500 years and which has produced very little.
Mind you, that should not surprise us as who is going to give up a nice cosy situation where you have absolute power, for one where you may end up a bit player in the scheme of things.
Appearing to do the right thing seems to have more value than doing the right thing, especially if you have convinced your listeners that what you are doing is the right thing and if anyone disagrees they are deemed “rebelling against the God ordained leadership”. In that respect, being a moron can be very satisfying, despite the fact that you are never going to get to where you should be going.
In case you are wondering what a moron is, it is an adult with the intelligence of a child, and no, that is not what Jesus meant when he said we had to become as little children to enter the Kingdom of God.

I was reading recently from a magazine called "Insights for Living, Australia" that only 14 percent of bornagain adults believe in absolute truth and base their ethics on Scripture. That's one in 7 Christians! That's a frightening statistic but has bearing on your latest comment.
That being the case, one has to ask just what the leadership of the church is doing to justify their salaries.
