In 1 John 2: 27 it says this “as for you, the anointing (endowment) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit-just as it has taught you, remain in him.”
It is amazing how many believers conduct their relationship with God through their minister or their church. They do not seem to be able to have a personal relationship with God that is direct and…well, personal.
The idea that God might talk to them personally, well that is just not possible. We have so called ‘ministers’ who can find out all we need to know and they are paid to let us know what that is.
Anyway, hearing from God yourself and acting on it could mean that you are rebellious.
Most of the New Testament has been written to tell us two things primarily. Who we are in Christ and how to live a victorious Christian walk.
We are the only religion that has a trinity. Yet we seem to treat the Holy Spirit as though he doesn’t exist. He is just someone that we talk about so that we are seen as spiritually correct.
However, this verse in John’s first epistle clearly shows that he has the very specific role of leading us into all truth. If that is the case, then there is no truth outside the Holy Spirit. If that is the case as the verse says, we do not need anyone to teach us.
But what about the Sunday sermon you say when the preacher tells us what is and isn’t truth?
What about the Sunday sermon? In the New Testament Church, this was an unknown except on very rare occasions when one of the apostles might address the church. Most of the learning was done around the meal table in a dialogue format. There were no bibles, and the Old Testament was used to show the truth about the messiah. It was not used to teach New Testament living.
There are several occasions when the apostles went out and established a church and then left them to develop on their own. Without a bible, how do you think they grew?
There can be only one answer to that and it is the Holy Spirit who led them into all truth. In other words, every believer who received the endowment of the Holy Spirit had him abiding in them and he became their teacher and guide.
The New Testament Church wasn’t in each others pocket every moment of the day and as they had no bible, they trusted the Holy Spirit to guide them. They had to because there was no one else to do so.
Bear in mind that everyone was a new convert so they were all in the same boat. They all needed the teaching that came through the Holy Spirit that was in them.
When they were confronted with this their recourse was not “I had better give the pastor a call and see what he thinks”. No, they drew on the anointing that was in them and they asked the Holy Spirit what his take on things were. Once they had that they could move forward.
Unlike today, they believed that the Holy Spirit could and would talk to them and when he did, they didn’t have to work out if it was the Holy Spirit speaking or some other source.
When you trust the supernatural power of God, as opposed to man’s wisdom which the New Testament clearly indicates is to be shunned, you get direct orders from the person closest to you and who knows all the answers. It is foolish to ignore the fact, but we do constantly and to our detriment.
We would rather trust man’s wisdom which we get on Sunday morning and in most cases is much ado about nothing. It is no wonder we are in a parched land spiritually as we have replace the guy who knows everything with the guy who knows very little by comparison.
